Two residents of Pandan died instantly last week when they used live wire connected to the power lines to catch fish in a river.
Dr. Catherine Tolledo declared laborer Ronnie Rodriguez, 49, and farmer Celso Vitalicio, both of barangay Lourdes, dead on arrival at the Pandan district hospital last Jan. 30 where the duo were brought after the incident.
According to the initial investigation conducted by the Pandan municipal police station, Ronnie’s sister Lydia dela Rosa revealed that his brother and his companion used wires tapped to the power lines of the First Catanduanes Electric Cooperative, Inc. in catching fish at Catabangan river at about 10 A.M.
Concerned citizens of the village immediately brought the victims to the hospital but it was already too late. A number of local fishermen use electricity from car or motorcycle batteries to stun and catch fish in local rivers, in violation of fishery laws.
